Eligibility of Electors
The City of Peterborough received the 2006 preliminary voter's list from MPAC on September 1, 2006. This data is acquired by MPAC and provided to the municipalities for use in elections. Approximately 5,000 of the 56,000 names on the voter's list indicate "citizenship undetermined".
The Municipal Elections Act states that only Canadian citizens may vote in a municipal election. Many other municipalities in Ontario are facing the
same issue with undetermined citizenship and have decided to simply remove these individuals from the voter's list. The City of Peterborough has
decided to be more proactive and to contact our residents directly to confirm this important information.
Therefore, the City of Peterborough has mailed a letter to each of the 5,000 individuals noted on the list. We will simply provide these individual
with a form to sign, confirming their Canadian citizenship, which will allow us to amend the electors list appropriately and ensure that these
individuals receive a Notice of Registration Card permitting them to vote on Election Day. It also ensures that individuals who are not Canadian
Citizens are removed from the list as they are not entitled to vote.
If you have any further questions regarding the collection of this data by MPAC, please contact them directly at 743-7439.
