Accessible Voting Locations

The City of Peterborough is a nationally recognized leader in advocating for accessibility for its residents. For the 2006 Municipal Election a comprehensive review was conducted to determine the accessibility of the Voting Locations.

We wanted to use the most accessible municipal buildings in the City of Peterborough and took several factors into consideration including:

  • location on bus routes
  • availability of parking
  • path of travel (exterior and interior)
  • lighting
  • access to the voting room

City of Peterborough Access Guidelines were used in conjunction with an Accessibility Checklist to ensure that the most appropriate buildings are used on Election Day.

Access To Rented Premises

Section 22 of the Tenant Protection Act provides that:

No landlord shall restrict reasonable access to a residential complex by candidates for election to any office at the federal, provincial or municipal level, or their authorized representatives, if they are seeking access for the purpose of canvassing or distributing election material.

This does not permit canvassing in that part of the building that has been designated as a voting location during voting hours.

Access To Condominuims

Section 118 of the Condominium Act provides as follows:

No corporation or employee or agent of a corporation shall restrict reasonable access to the property by candidates, or their authorized representatives, for election to the House of Commons, the Legislative Assembly or an office in a municipal government or school board if access is necessary for the purpose of canvassing or distributing election material.

Institutions or Long Term Care Facility/Retirement Home

The City of Peterborough will designate special voting locations with special hours of operation for local longe term care facilities/institutions . Only the residents of the institution or long term care facility home may vote at the designated location. The City is currently coordinating the hours of operation with each facility manager and will provide locations and hours of operation in the near future.
